To prepare this resource:
- Print 2 copies
- Color both
- Keep one sheet as the control
- Cut out the moon shapes on the other sheet to be your sequencing cards
3 Part Cards
Present the phases of the moon lesson using a control sheet as reference.
The child should already have an understanding that the moon’s appearance changes and why that happens.

The first skill to master is placing the moon images in the correct sequence.
This can be in a line or around the earth, whichever makes the most sense to the child.
Second, work on adding the names and descriptions to the images.
Matching Level 1: Sequencing
- Use the control sheet to show the position of the earth, sun and moon
- Set out 3 part cards with names
- Set out the picture cards without names
- Child will match the correct moon images
- *Title tags are not used
Matching Level 2: Descriptions
- Use the control sheet to show the position of the earth, sun and moon
- Set out the picture cards without names
- Child will match title tag to the correct moon image
- May use a reference book (or control sheet)
